Before we get to the 3 simple words which I believe summarize the Gospel. I would like to start with:
Who God is and His Character
Who we are in God and our character
Then I will go over the three simple words that make up the Gospel
It’s important to know who God is and then know who we are. Therefore we can preach the gospel by applying the three simple words.
Let’s start with God by looking at Exodus 34:5-7
Here we will read how God proclaims who He is and His character to Moses.
Exodus 34:5-7 And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. 6 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; 7 who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations”.
It is important to read this and understand that:
God is compassionate – Because He understands that human’s compassion for each other does not come from a pure heart. That sin has overtaken our ability to truly be compassionate with each other.
God is gracious – He understands that humans are poor because we live in sin. We need a Savior and therefore He promised us one. (Gen. 3:15)
God is slow to anger – He is patient with us not wanting anyone to perish but to come to know Him. (2 Peter. 3:9)
God is loving and kindness – He understands that love and kindness can penetrate into the darkest of heart.
God is truth – God is truth to Himself, to His creation and to His children. He did not give up on us. He came up with the plan to save us all.
All these characteristic of God leads to the most undeserving characteristic and that is:
God is forging – Since He understands, He is compassionate with us, He is gracious with us, He is slow to anger meaning He is patient waiting for us to equally understand and respond to Him. To see, hear and feel His abounding loving-kindness because He is true to Himself. With Gods clues on display to us every day in the Sunrise, Sun fall and with the breath of life. God is true and giving us a second chance to look up and call on Him. Then He will forgive our iniquity, our transgression, and sins. But if we continue to ignore Him by not seeing, neither hearing nor feel the clues that God throws at us each day then we will be judged.
The unforgeable characteristic of God:
God is just – He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations” (Exodus 34:5-7)
Let’s look at four verses that shows who we are. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ we become:
John 1:12-13 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
2 Corinthians 6:4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses;
2 Corinthians 5:20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
We are Christians, born again, children of God not born of this world but born of God. We are a new creation, being transformed into His image very day. The old nature of sin is dead and the new nature of Christ lives in us.
We are also servants and ambassadors of God/Christ.
This is important to know because; addition this we are the Salt and Light of the world.
Matthew 5:13-14 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world.
What does it mean, well I think it means
That the salt is what is inside us. The salt represents the new nature inside. That is working to purify and transform us into the Christ-like image.
The light is what comes out of us.
We purify the atmosphere where ever we go with our actions and word because we are Christians – to be Christians is to be Christ-like. Being Christ-like is being the child that has been born again with a new nature and has become a servant and ambassadors. We are the salt and light of the world.
That is who we are; we are the ones that make a different within this world.
God showed Himself in the Old Testament in many different ways. He also revealed Himself in Jesus Christ (God the Son), but now God wants to reveal Himself through us. He wants His light to shine ever brighter in this dark world.
To be Christ-like is to be God-like.
We know about God’s characteristic.
We know who we are.
I repeat myself: To be Christ-like is to be God-like what does this mean.
Our character must be like God/Christ as we read earlier in Exodus 34:5-7
We are to be:
- Slow to Anger
- Truth which leads to forging other and to forgive ourselves because that is how God treats us.
We do not judge, we leave that to God.
Now I would like to share the three simple words that make up the Gospel.
What is forgiveness: It’s the wiliness to let go. To forgive someone for their wrongdoing is to heal and restore a broken relationship.
The power of God’s character is the power of Forgiveness. It’s the power that we must show the world.
Forgiveness: Is loved express in a genuine way.
It shows that we are not perfect. It shows that no one is perfect that we all make mistakes.
When forgiving others we are acting like God/ like Christ. We forgive, we love because of God first forgave us and loved us.
We forgive because that is what we do.
Forgive others is not only what we do, we also have to forgive ourselves.
Matthew 6:15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
What is Grace?
Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Graces is a gift of God to all of us. What kind of gift?
The gift is the blood of Jesus: He is the Lamb of God.
How beautiful it is to be forgiven, because of His grace.
Our past, present, and future sins are forgiven because of the gift, of grace He gave us.
Can we bring this gift of graces to other, the same graces that we have been given?
I believe we can.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The gift of God is His grace/ eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We cannot pay God for our sin because He is eternal, but the eternal God-Son became human. On the cross, He took our sin to become the Lamb of God who takes way our sin.
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
2 Corinthians 5:18-21 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Reconciliation is a restored relationship. Which is forgiveness?
Verses 21: shows us the gift of God which is His grace.
I will conclude with this. We are to be Christ-like/God-like in our character with other and to ourselves. We are to be the salt and the light to the world. We are to be: compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, loving/kindness, and truth which leads to forging other and to ourselves.
We are to preach forgiveness, grace which then leads to faith.
We are to help other to see, to hear and to feel God’s abounding loving-kindness.
We are to make difference in this world.
Let God use you.
Let God mold your character.
Let God’s light shine throw you.
